NOTES

EARTHQUAKE   30th April 2015
An earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great destruction, as a result of volcanic action or movements deep within the earth's crust. In a earthquake, most of the damage caused by collapsing buildings, This is a major problem confronting architects. Cost effective solution is also a challenge. The Japanese believe that anti-disaster investments are lifesavers. If the Indian govt makes a public investment in this area, it should first come to some sort of social agreement in disaster mitigation. The role of the mass media is also important because it plays a key role in creating awareness about disaster preparedness.
Legislation also plays an important role in disaster mitigation. The Japanese govt has amended the Building Standard Law at regular intervals to reflect the advances of Science and Technology and the lessons learnt from the last earthquake that occurred.         (Source: The Hindu Editorial)

A man-eater tiger which killed 2 persons and injured several others in Wayanad district was shot dead by TN police. Kerala and TN Govt had arranged about 170 persons for search operations and to kill the tiger. The operation came in to success after 3 days search in Kerala- TN forest ranges.
The district authorities had installed nearly 65 cameras in the villages and tea estates around the forest. The tiger, described as a "man-eater" by authorities, killed the women in the Doddabetta Forest range near the town of Ooty in Tamil Nadu.
After a two day protest, Wildlife Officials decided to invoke a special clause from the Indian Wildlife Protection Act that gives officials the power to cull an animal that they deem a threat to human life. With the man-eater tiger already claiming the lives of two villagers, officials thought that this was the right thing to do. That said, wildlife activists and conservationists have raised questions as to why officials did not opt for relocating the tiger elsewhere, instead of opting for the crude method of killing it.
Last week, two persons had lost their lives in the tiger attack in two villages near Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Due to public protest, the Kerala government had ordered for killing of the tiger. Subsequently, the Forest and Wildlife Departments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu launched a joint mission to hunt down the “man eater.”
Nearly 45 schools were shut down and villagers were forced indoors.
The TN district Collector and the forest officials are deep inside the forest.
The tiger was also blamed for the death of several bison, including one just hours before it was itself killed.
There has been a spate of tiger attacks in India recently, with at least 17 people killed in little more than a month.
A tiger turning to human prey is said to be "a rare aberration"
A tiger usually makes one large kill every week. That's about 85,000 a year, across the whole of India.
Fewer than 85 humans are killed or injured by tigers every year in India - a fraction of the number killed by snakebites or rabies.

Tigers are the largest members of the cat family and are the largest of the big cats. A highly endangered species, only two species of the tigers remain in the world now — the Bengal tigers from India and the Siberian or Amur tigers from Russia.
